Domestic accidents: pay attention to the laundry in pods!

Accidents related to the use of single-dose liquid laundry increased in children under 5 years of age. On March 16, 2015, the Directorate General of Health (DGS) once again recalled their dangerousness. Let's get them out of reach of children!

Responsible for many accidents in young children

  • Practical, water-soluble liquid laundry pods are more and more present in French homes. And today they are at the origin of twice as many accidental exposures as conventional liquid detergents, worry poison control centers and toxicovigilance.
  • From 2009 to 2014, cases of household accidents related to these doses, such as poisoning, increased from 500 to 5000.
  • Of all these exposures, 92% involved children under 5 years of age. And 7% of affected children were under one year old.
  • The appearance of these water-soluble pods of liquid laundry, their very often attractive color, their small size "easy to catch" are all elements that encourage small children to put them in their mouths. The shell of the capsule, water soluble, breaks immediately in contact with saliva, releasing a chemical liquid, very aggressive to the skin and whose ingestion can have serious consequences for health.
  • The main manifestations are digestive (vomiting, irritation), respiratory (coughing, difficulty breathing, infections) and ocular (conjunctivitis, corneal damage).
  • In a statement, the Health Branch again insisted on the vigilance measures for these products which must, like all other household products, be kept out of reach of children.
