Your child 3-5 years

Imaginary friend, do you have to play the game?

One day, your child talks to you about a new boyfriend. A classmate, a little neighbor? No, a friend who exists only in his head. So, the day he asks you to make him a place on the couch ... it stuck!

The problem

Your child does not leave his new friend. He speaks to him, confides all his little secrets, plays hours with him and even insists that he come to walk in the park with you!

Who disturbs it?

  • You. The day your child asks you to make a little room for his friend on your couch, you start asking questions. What if he was losing ground with reality?

He has an imaginary friend because he has ... imagination!

By telling stories, your child is creative. Good! It's a way to express yourself.

  • What has to be done. Respect his imaginary creations. If he solicits you, you can even get into his game, while setting a few limits.
  • What does it tell him? "Your friend can have dinner with us if you have invited him in. But no way he's eating for you."

He has an imaginary friend because he is learning to separate

Companion, double, brother: this imaginary friend allows your child to distance himself from you.

  • What has to be done. Let him play with his friend and offer to take him with him when he is reluctant to sleep at his grandmother's.
  • What does it tell him? "You're not really alone since your friend is with you."
